Illegal Banners Taken Down - The Star

Down it goes: Council enforcement officers removing an illegal banner in Jalan Sepoy Lines, one of many put up by a company.

DESPITE numerous warnings, illegal banners are still being put up in various parts of George Town, according to Penang Municipal councillor Ong Ah Teong.

“We detected 31 such banners in Jalan Sepoy Lines, Jalan Utama and Jalan Macalister and took them down on Tuesday.

“The banners were put up by advertising company workers before the permits were approved by the council,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Ong said the workers came to apply for the permits to put up the banners on Monday but they failed to follow the proper application procedures.

“They were then told to come back after filling out the proper forms, and the permits would then be issued within 24 hours.

“They insisted on putting up the banners even though the permits had yet to be issued,” he said.

Ong said the council had no choice but to take down the banners, and issue the company with three summonses under a council by-law, adding that company was also blacklisted.

He urged companies and business operators to ensure that they had a permit before putting up their advertising materials.
